Finding peace for a fearful mind
I search for peace and quiet and stillness when my mind is troubled.
Shetland is the place to find it - and Yell (the second big island in the Shetland Isles) is a particular favourite of mine to search for it.
Today was.... ah, words almost fail me. It was like stepping across a line into transcendence, into another world. The sky was wide open and full of blue from horizon to horizon. Long grasses and meadow flowers filled the fields, gently swaying as the wind whispered and breathed through them. Faint sounds of birds calling, of the wind moving, of the sea shifting to and fro were all I could hear, the waves lapping across the shifting sandy shoreline...
You stop, and you stop and at last... you stop. The senses heighten, but at the same time your whole body just slows down until it feels as though your heart beats with the same pulse as the ground beneath you... slow, quiet, steady.
You feel as though you don't want anyone to break that peace, that perfect silence where your mind and heart are stilled before the majesty and wonder of creation. You don't want anything to break that spell.
Why do we come back from that to our busy lives? Sometimes I really don't know...
