White-tailed deer

The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is a medium-sized deer native to the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America.

It was introduced to Finland as a present from Finnish immigrants to the United States back in the 1930s. Only four females and a male survived the journey to Finland, but out of these few the whole species started here. Now there are some 30 000 white-tailed deers in Finland, and there is a regular hunting season for them, too.

This beautiful specimen was peacefully grazing by the lake at Tyven - we could see it from our porch, and it did not get scared because of our presence at all - just moved gracefully a bit further away, when it heard the sound from the camera shutter.
