Young Turk
Early blip today, and it had to be a hummer. At this time of the summer, they are a guaranteed blip because they are plentiful in our yard. This is one of this year's babies whom I've dubbed "Young Turk". He's a male - you can tell because he's got a bit of dark "stubble" on his neck and if you look closely you'll see one dark spot on the side of his neck - this is his first dark gorget feather. By next summer, he will have a gorgeous red throat like his dad, P-Hummie. But for now, he's got to concentrate on getting in peak condition for his fall migration to central America.
If you're wondering about the black background - I took this is bright sunlight with the woods (which are heavily shaded) in the background. It always reads as black on the camera, which makes for very interesting backgrounds, don't you think?
Two other quick shots from this morning...
