Les Grandes Dames

I went to the opening of Lys Hansen's exhibition, Love + War + Paint, at the Lillie Art Gallery in Milngavie tonight.
I previewed the show in today's Herald.
It's local to me so for once it was quite easy to get to - although my husband was out so had to rope in my sister-in-law to help.
As I've said before, I don't get out much. It's sometimes just too darned complicated!!
This picture shows Lys (left) with the journalist, Lesley Duncan, who has written an essay for the exhibition's catalogue.
Lesley is the poetry editor of The Herald. As the daughter of two artists, she knows and loves her art.
The headline in today's Herald played up the 'grande dame' theme and Lys made a joke about this in her speech tonight. She even ended it by singing a line from 'There is nothing like a dame' from South Pacific.
As I was leaving, Lys and Lesley were outside the front door so I snapped this picture of the two 'grandes dames'. (Please pronounce in French accent...)
This exhibition is well worth seeing. It's not easy viewing but it is as honest as the day is long.
As Lys said tonight: 'This is a culmination of thought, feelings - my heart...'
A more honest array of work you are unlikely to see.
