St Mary's Church
. . . in West Walton which is a village in Norfolk a few miles from its boundary with Cambridgeshire. The church was built around 1250. The bell tower is unusual because it is about 60 feet away from the main building.
In the foreground is a structure on top of a grave, the term is "tomb chest". In discussions with helpful folk in the church I learnt that the well-to-do or highly regarded tended to be buried in the south and east part of the grounds. The most eminent were interred within the church itself. Those not in these categories were confined to the north and west sections of the churchyard.
These distinctions in status were deemed to matter when thinking of Judgement Day and helping the Almighty differentiate the worthy from those less so.
