CIP

Calf intestine is apparently the source of Calf Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase (CIP), about which Wikipedia says:

Calf Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase (CIP) is an enzyme that catalyzes the 5' phosphate group's removal from DNA. This enzyme is frequently used in DNA sub-cloning, because DNA fragments which lack the 5' phosphoryl termini cannot self-ligate. Preventing self ligation is important both in improving the yield of properly ligated product, and reducing the background of improperly self-ligated contaminant.

There, now you know! (And, no... I haven't got a clue what it is on about either).

Busy day today. A bike ride to Bristol and back, followed by a 5 mile walk around Blagdon with friends - including @jayneebevan - which is where we saw these calves. Perhaps I should've gone for a run as well - then I'd have got the hat-trick!

The New Inn in Blagdon is very nice.
