Skiathos Day 7 - Baywatch
Being a lifeguard seems to be an amazing job... At this stage in proceedings I can't really swim though so I've ruled it out as an alternative career prospect!
We'd gone to hire a car for a few days to see a bit more of the island, but the recommended place had none left, and a bus turned up so we jumped on it for an impromptu trip to Koukounaries Beach. We had towels etc with us anyway so it all worked out OK.
A really nice place, the sea was incredible, sand shimmering underwater like crystals. I think it was silicon or something? Amazing whatever it was. A beautiful beach, very popular though, maybe a bit too popular, but enjoyable anyway.
As authentic as I like to be when abroad, there comes a time when a man needs a burger. What I found in Skiathos though was when you ordered a burger, you got.... a burger.
OK then....
By burger, I mean a burger with no bun, or cheese, or anything like that. You got chips and salad and the burger was always very nice, it wasn;t just a single disc on a plate, but...
So lunch was burger, good burger nonetheless.
A bus back to the apartment as we lamented how quickly the week has gone and how we hoped week 2 would slow down to a crawl.
Food at Avli - one of the best places in town. Ordered way too much food though. By the time we'd eaten our mixed starters we didn't need anything else, but I'd ordered mixed grilled fish, and Catherine had ordered Bream, and both orders were massive!!!
We usually try very hard not to waste food, especially fish. Not because we're gluttons, but out of respect for the processes and effort that have gone into making it or growing it or catching it. Fishing is so dangerous and it just seems wrong to discard fish when people have risked all to get it. I know they still get paid, but even so.
In this case though we just couldn't finish - our consolation was that the number of cats on Skiathos that roamed the restaurants and streets, would make short work of the leftovers.
What we did manage to eat though was stunningly good.
