Corpus Christi College

This is the only college founded by Cambridge townspeople and established in 1352 by the Guilds of Corpus Christi and The Blessed Virgin Mary. During the Peasant Revolt in 1381, a mob of townspeople and some students, led by the Mayor, stormed the college in protest against the rigid extraction of 'candle rents' which were charges assessed upon houses according to the number of tapers found within. The Charter was burnt and the silver plate was taken as the college was focused on as the centre of discontent. Back to the present day, there is a lot of discontent amongst council tenants who now have a bedroom tax on top of the rent if it is decided they have more bedrooms than they need. It has caused the problem of people willing to downsize, but not sufficient smaller properties available. A revolting situation indeed !
