Watching the birch peel

Time for the birch to shed its bark. Why does it do this? I'm told it is because the tree grows faster than the bark, and so the old bark has no choice but to split and peel away, leaving the beautiful smooth new version on show. Tempted to start peeling, but I am trying to resist ...
