Major Oak

The second day of our holiday in Nottinghamshire has taken us to the ancient town of Newark and this afternoon we looked at a tree.....

This tree.....

Major Oak is one of the ancient oaks in Sherwood Forest, and is one of a handful that have been supported by steel frames, and in some cases, bands around their trunks and/or branches.

Estimates put the age of this tree at over 1000 years old.

Legend has it that Robin Hood and his band of men would have hidden in a tree like this.

It would not have been this tree because at the time of Robin Hood this would not have been fully grown.

The large clear area around the tree, and the fence, are there to ensure it gets all the nutrients it needs.
