Splitting Up
(The photo has nothing to do with the text, this is lovely Italian Sandra at our yearly summer party).
After almost two years, some 40.000 frames, 383 blips (out of 850) and after careful consideration, D800 and I have decided to go our separate ways. It has been a wonderful relationship, only with a few bumps in the road. I guess this is normal in a relationship when you spend a lot of time together.
D800 has been totally faithful, and, er, I have not, but that does not mean that I am the only one to be blamed. A certain dose of prima donna attitude has bothered me, combined with the fact that there are some clear areas where improvement in behavior is required.
Well, I thought that D800 would benefit from a new environment and a new and better partner (…have you heard that before? “You deserve somebody better that me”). Hence I took the appropriate steps to secure a smooth transition.
The first step in the journey is to spend some time with the lovely people at Photo Grancy in Lausanne, who will find a new permeant partner. What you did not know yesterday, was that I had an agreement to deliver D800 at 11am, which meant that yesterday’s blip was the last one ever with this camera.
Despite the concerns expressed earlier, I do love D800 and I really wanted the departure blip to be “above average”. Your overwhelming response certainly made that happen. This turned out to be my fourth most highly rated blip ever (so far), and it reached the third position in the Spotlight where it spend most of the day. I thought that this was a great farewell gift from all of you!!! Thank you so much!
Finally, I have to just mention the handover moment. My friend Heidi at Photo Grancy had given the D800 a final check and was ready to take it away. Then she says to me, “Say goodbye to your friend”! You have no clue how emotional this suddenly became, it actually almost became embarrassing…
