Claridge's Hotel, London
Mr Mivart started a hotel on this site in 1812 in a terraced house, and over the years it grew. By 1854, the hotel had expanded into neighbouring houses, but Mivart wanted to retire and sold the hotel to a couple who owned a smaller hotel next door - Mr & Mrs Claridge.
The hotel's profile was established when Empress Eugenie stayed there in 1860 and Queen Victoria visited her.
In 1984, Richard D'Oyly-Carte bought the place and knocked it down, replacing it with the current 203 room building. The hotel continued to attract the rich and famous. Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock, Brad Pitt and Mick Jagger have all stayed there.
It's famous for its Christmas Tree. In 2013, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana designed it.
