Church of the Holy Cross - Whorlton
Out for a pleasant walk this afternoon and came across the abandoned village of Whorlton near Swainby on the northern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors.
Apart from the church and a ruined castle, nothing remains of the village except some earthworks. The church sits in a shaded churchyard with many ancient gravestones - a very quiet and still place in the shadows of the afternoon sunshine.
I also photographed the 14th century gatehouse of the ruined castle (sadly on English Heritage's at risk register due to vandalism and general decay) - here.
