Shoes for a better future
Maybe as the granddaughter of a shoemaker, I have always had an "eye" for shoes. I tend to notice people's shoes more than I notice their clothing. But this box of shoes is special indeed. These are fitted to correct club foot condition at a very early age. Wearing the shoes, which are braced with one of the blue metal bars you can see, for a period of time, together with manipulation can allow a child with club foot to be able to walk normally. If the child is a little older, he/she may need a series of plaster casts to help correct the condition. Older again, without this early treatment and the child will need expensive surgery. Jones, the physiotherapist at the Rukungiri Life Skills Clinic, set up by the Church of Uganda, works with many such children. And we were privileged to see him at work and meet some of the children benefitting from his skill and care.
