Up Pompei today. More to follow later.....

......as I was saying, another adventure on the number 4 bus from Salerno to Pompei....it's quite like the 87 service to Penicuik. Actually, there are comparisons to be drawn...Penicuik is a bit down on its luck, looks quite untidy in the centre and used to be a centre for paper-making; so is Vietri.....a bit shabby, has seen better days pre-2008 crash and used to be stuffed with paper mills. Shame about paper.

Pompei is an experience but frankly I wouldn't go out of your way. Queues for everything...ticket buying, ticket checking, to see potentially interesting buildings...it's a sausage factory. I felt a bit jaded by the end and not at all moved by the extraordinary human event that took place...there 'a no hint of it. Herculaneum, just up the coast is apparently much better. I did like Vesuvius, it looks so benign and yet the next time it kicks-off.......
