Surfing at Hookipa Beach
This is a photo of surfing at Hookipa State Beach on the North Shore of Maui. Swells were at about 4 feet today. Nothing exciting. However, once the swell hits the reef, the becomes a bit more entertaining. Winter time in Hawaii is the surf season, contrary to what many believe. Forecasted swells tomorrow are supposed to be 15+ feet. Unfortunately, I won?t be near any surfing breaks to witness the fun.
I?m hoping on Monday, when I?m on the North Shore of Oahu, that the swells are swollen and I?ll head to Pipeline, where the surfers are pretty close to shore, and the waves big and fast, to get the ultimate surfing blip.
Time will tell.
Interesting story about Hookipa beach. Back in the ?80s, I was really into sailboarding. I eschewed normal high-school sports and was always heading to the frigid waters around Seattle to put on booties and a wet suit to go sailboarding. Then, In 1987, I finally got to come to Maui. I wanted to to do nothing but visit Hookipa to watch the sailboarders. It never happened back then. But today, I finally got to see the fun. I would have tried to capture all the sailboarding going on out there today, however, I only had a 200mm lens and the boarders are really far out there.
