Tweed Bridge, Peebles

There has been a bridge here since time immemorial. As recently as the 15th century the latest wooden bridge was replaced by a stone one, and so parts of this structure are more than 600 years old. Of course, it has been refashioned, and widened in 1663, 1799, 1834 and 1900.

Until the 18th century it was the only crossing of the River north of Kelso - almost 40 miles away. The situation today, though, is that if the Tweed Bridge were taken out of service for any reason, it would be a nine mile round trip to get from one part of the town of Peebles to the other.

There's talk of building another vehicle crossing in the town.....
