Iona

My annual birthday trip to Iona, this year staying over a night instead of a day trip. We always visit the North Beach and I always take photos of this track through the Machair. This is the end of our first day, leaving the beach hot and tired, with the walk home still ahead of us. But how could we fail to renew our energy with a sky like this. Not to mention a truly scrumptious birthday dinner at the St Columba Hotel.

Machair is the strip of dune land above high tide level where often marram grass grows. Machair is one of the rarest habitats in Europe, found only in the north and west of Britain and Ireland. Very special.
