Momentous Occasion (Well, for me anyway..)

Some of you may know I don't consider myself to be a green fingered person. However, in the last few months I noticed that my spider plant was having babies. : )

To my delight, today I also noticed that my orchid has 2 new shoots! Here's one of them. I am wondering why it's growing outwards and not upwards though.. am I supposed to help it somehow?
