Present Future Past
All those times at once, caught here in grandson B's expression as he enjoyed his iced tea at lunch; a hint of who he'll be as a man; and the location -- the Edison Café, a classic small town eatery in Skagit County, just south of us.
We opted for items from the all-day breakfast listing: Z and B enjoyed French toast with syrup, bacon, and scrambled eggs, followed by a shared (4 ways) chocolate chip brownie with fresh raspberry puree and whipped cream on top. Phil had fried eggs and local potatoes (95% of the red potatoes grown in our state are grown in the Skagit River valley), and I had a small breakfast sandwich.
Fortified, we then headed out to Padilla Bay National Estaurine Research Reserve, where the much-anticipated surprise event was to take place. To learn more about that, I refer you to Phil's blip.
We spent a little time in the interpretive center there, which houses interesting exhibits and several fascinating small aquariums that house representative flora and fauna from Padilla Bay. Phil and I loved the decorator crabs, so named because they stick tiny sea animals and plants to their bodies to make it harder for predators to see them or harm them. This one definitely had the best sense of style!
Back in Bellingham, another must on the grandchildren's list-- Icing on the Cake -- was inexplicably closed on a day on which it was supposed to be open. Fortunately, Manpies, home of the best meat (and vegetable) pies around, was open, so supper was safe! We brought home our choices, I made a salad, and the leftover gelato from yesterday meant that a good meal was enjoyed by all.
