Holiday lens
Have been in two minds if I wanted to drag my 100-400mm lens on holiday. A fabulous lens its , but its also a massive weight to lug around. We've got a couple of things planned where I don't really want to be constantly changing lenses either, so a lighter 70-200mm was too expensive and still a bit limiting.
So, after much consideration, I decided to buy a holiday lens. Being a full frame, the choice is rather limiting and the quality I know won't match up to My L's.
Tamron announced a 28-300mm super zoom earlier in the year and it became available at the end of June. However, I still haven't seen any critical reviews. But, time was getting short, so I jumped in with both feet at the weekend and ordered one.
Of course, it doesn't have the IQ of either my 24-105 or 100-400, especially wide open and at the edges, but, it still does a commendable job despite the obvious trade-offs that have to be made in such a complex construction. As I intend to be using it in good light and mainly for street photography, the compromises and much lighter weight I hope will be worth it.
Have done a few shots and Adobe have already created lens correction profiles. They have quite an effect at the wide angle end. A few quick tests with a target shows it doesn't resolve quite as good as either L's but then I didn't expect it to. It does get better at f8-f11 which is where you would like it to. It does focus down to about 18", even at the 300mm end - quite impressive. Focussing is very quiet and still very quick. Lets see what the outcome of a 1,000 images at the street festival in ten days time does for my opinion.
