Huntingtower Castle, Perth

Huntingtower Castle was originally called the House of Ruthven and dates back to the 15th century. The Ruthven family fought with Robert the Bruce and were made Sheriffs of Perth in 1313.
James VI was held there forcibly in 158 aged 15. In revenge, James later executed the perpetrators of the plot, proscribed the name Ruthven and seized the castle and lands. Since then the castle has been known as Huntingtower.

The castle has inspired poetry and songs over the centuries including the beautiful song by Caroline, Lady Nairn:

" “Huntingtower is mine, lassie,
Huntingtower is mine, Jeanie;
Huntingtower, an’ Blairnagower,
An’ a’ that’s mine is thine, Jeanie!”
