All too familiar!
The scene of an accident. Another one. There are so many accidents at the junction in front of the house.
This time, rush hour traffic racing past, a driver failed to see a cyclist as he made a dive onto the A25 between speeding cars. The rider was catapulted onto the bonnet of the car travelling behind then hit the kerb.
Chance had it that there was a doctor in a following vehicle. He was able to give initial assistance and to explain the condition of the cyclist to the emergency services. Three ambulances arrived and a helicopter was flown in to eventually take the cyclist, with head injuries and leg fractures, to St George's Hospital in Tooting.
The roads were closed to Guildford and Albury for over three hours.
It happens all to often on this road... when will they put traffic calming measures in place?
Adding a little something. The road is the main road between Guildford and Dorking. It is also the route for the Prudential Cycle Ride. There are not tens but nearer hundreds of cyclists that follow the route although there are no cycle lanes. Nearer we come to the annual event the more come out to practice. Many are safe cyclists, as this one may have been, but others should learn to respect the rules of the road for cyclists. Often riding two and three abreast, they are becoming the pet hate of all the locals. Nobody has anything against cycling as a sport but when they cause long tail backs for disrespect or narrow roads, patience wears thin and accidents happen. It's not my place to say if it's drivers or cyclists at fault but know that something will have to be done soon to make the route safe for everyone.
