Kittiwake nest

Kittiwakes are ocean-going gulls that only come to their cliff-ledge nesting colonies in the summer. Unfortunately for them, there are no decent cliffs in Northumbria - but no matter, the quayside buildings in Newcastle and Gateshead serve just as well.

The bird on the left is a young one, not quite fledged, with its parent beside.
