David Hume, philosopher.
Into Edinburgh tonight to attend a concert. The weather was dreadful, with rain and a thickening fog. My planned blip had disappeared into the fog so I had to settle for this shot of the bronze statue of David Hume, the 18th century philosopher who was part of the Scottish Enlightenment.
Hume, famously, despised and derided all things superstitious so it's quite funny to note that the statue has attracted such a practice. When it was first erected in 1997, philosophy students at the University would rub the big toe for luck. The practice spread and now tourists and residents alike will rub Hume's big toe for luck. As a result it has become very shiny, which can be seen in the photo.
