One River - Nearly!!!

Today has been a day of nearly.... I decided I hadn't really done justice to the River Don on my last outing, so I returned to Penistone today to have a more intimate experience with the river. I had a pleasant walk close to the bank and got a wonderful but all too brief sighting of a Kingfisher. I hung around for an hour in the hope it would return, but no such luck. Further along, the river flows under the Penistone Viaduct and I had hoped it might be possible to get a photo where the river and the Viaduct were both in the frame. It was an either - or and as you can see, the viaduct won out. You'll have to take my word for it that the River Don flows beneath this wonderful viaduct just to the right of this image.
The Penistone Line is more than just a railway line. In the mould of the Settle to Carlisle Line, it is a whole experience, with on and off train events, wonderful panoramas, and spectacular viaducts. Like the Settle to Carlisle, it was threatened with closure but was reprieved by popular demand. A number of years ago now, I walked the length of the the line in instalments - from Sheffield to Huddersfield, and really enjoyed the experience.
