Butcher bird

Or more precisely a Red-backed Shrike. Now an incredibly rare breeder in England with only one pair breeding recently very close to where we stayed in Devon over Christmas. Here however they are mercifully plentiful and they brighten up any walk.
This was a little further away than I wanted but it was skittish, possibly because I expect it had a nest nearby. Later on we crossed paths with a whole family of them and the young were unafraid of us. However they are not as attractive as an adult male so I stuck with this image.
As with other shrikes, they have a pleasant habit of skewering prey such as small mammals and insects on thorns in their larder to come back to at a latter stage. Presumably it tenderises those voles or mice nicely ....
