The desktop was confirmed to be dead. The young man at the service centre told me it was a "vintage" model, therefore no longer supported and not repairable. Sigh.

I traded it in for a measly 100 bucks and spent thousands on a new model. That's mostly set up now, so hopefully several years of fuss free computing ahead. I hope.....
