Highway 61 to New Orleans
Day Five of our Road Trip and we've arrived in New Orleans.
We spent last night in a bedbuggy motel and pretty much flopped out of bed and into the Mustang in search of escape / breakfast. As we exited onto the interstate, a sign read, 'Come back soon or we'll come git ya'. Next to the sign was a cannon.
We arrived at Cedar Grove B&B in the hope of seeing a Delta plantation house (like the one in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) and were invited to stay for breakfast. This was our first experience of biscuits and gravy which aren't actually like digestives and bisto but more like scones and a very peppery roux. They were good.
After that we got a tour of the house from the hotel manager. I now know that Southerners traditionally had their master bedroom on the ground floor in case of fire, Union ships could shoot at the house from boats on the Mississippi River during the civil war and ladies would be told to 'mind their own beeswax' if their make-up began to melt off their faces.
This picture is of R in front of the Mississippi River. A steamboat had just gone past but I didn't get it in shot.
Following a bit more driving down Highway 61 we went to Baton Rouge and the Louisiana State University Rural Life museum. It was a bit like the Bedales Outdoor Work department.
We arrived in New Orleans and have gone out with friends for Po Boys. We might sleep in tomorrow.
