Northern Gannet - Bempton Cliffs.

A VERY early start this morning (on the road by 5am) for a 300 mile round trip to RSPB Bempton Cliffs. Luckily I wasnt driving and could sleep most of the way there.
Definitely worth the mileage. The birds were spectacular. A few Puffins had even hung around to welcome us, though most were long gone. Gannets and Kittiwakes were still raising young. The Gannet parents were mostly young females who were mating for the first time. Experienced females have their eggs early (March) to avoid the autumn and winter storms when migrating. The young ones have to learn by experience. Interestingly Gannet parents have no parental bond with their chicks. If the chick stays in the nest area it will be fed. Move out of that area and the parents will ignore it. Once fledged the parents have nothing further to do with the chick. Only Gannets and Puffins of all the birds have this relationship with their young.
This Gannet is collecting grass and sticks. The practical among us will believe it is gathering nest repair material. The more romantically inclined will believe it is seeking a gift for its mate - Gannets are known to provide 'presents'for their mates as part of the bond-strengthening ritual.
