Kings Canyon

Again we got up at 5am, in the dark, for the drive from camp to the walk. The guide was very knowledgable about the history, geology, plants and wildlife. We had a stiff climb to get up onto the rim, from where I've taken this picture, then it was a careful walk because of crumbling rock near the edges. Sometimes we were in little hidden valleys, including 'Priscilla's Crack' a narrow entry to a valley, which featured in the film 'Priscilla Queen of the Desert'. We then made our way into a beautiful rocky dell with water, palms etc. This had been kept secret for many years by the locals. It was a lovely walk for about 3 hours.
Our long journey to Alice Springs took much longer than expected - somewhere along the dirt road one of the side storage doors of the truck had burst open, and a large Esky (cold box), our water barrel, and a girl's luggage had tumbled out. The driver decided to turn round to find it so we had a very uncomfortable drive back for an hour till he had to turn back, as we'd not have had enough fuel to get us to Alice. Not having spare water miles from anywhere was also an issue!
