Rudisha halts the Rain

So Thursday night at Hampden. The tension was electric. After the public's athletics hero tarnished his own shine a few days earlier, the fans' hero had arrived.

The mood was reminiscent of that night in Berlin 2009 where something spectacular was expected of Bolt, while British fans hoped and prayed that Jessica Ennis could take the world crown. Both happened within half an hour or so.

This was much smaller scale, but the ingredients were the same for Scottish fans - an icon in our presence alongside the home girl Eilidh Child. Eilidh delivered exactly what we knew she would - a clear silver behind clear world no.1 Kaliese Spencer. Hampden cried, followed by a stomping rendition of The Proclaimers 500 miles which staunch Jambo Eilidh was quite rightly having none of. 5-1, she reminded us.

Rudisha was not quite in top form after a difficult year in 2013, and Nijel Amos took it in his trademark eyeballs-out style.

But the rain stopped for Rudisha. As it should.
