Gift # 74 - Jackson Square

On our last day in New Orleans, we paused for a moment on our walk back to our hotel after "Cafe-au-Lait and Beignets" at Cafe du Monde in the French Quarter (the touristy thing to do when in NOLA) so that Jeanette could step inside Jackson Square, which is a National Historic Landmark. The statue is of Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans who later became a US President. The building in the center is St. Louis Cathedral.

An interesting note is that this Square originally overlooked the Mississippi River, but now the view is blocked by the building of the levees to protect the city from flooding. My early morning walk took me along the "Moon Walk" - the scenic boardwalk on top of the levee commissioned by Mayor Moon Landrieu to reconnect the city to the river.
