All Saints Church, Ramsholt, Suffolk

As it was such a wonderful evening we drove to the tiny hamlet of Ramsholt which sits on the banks of the River Deben.
We found this delightful little church which is flint and render built in Norman times with an unusual round tower with large buttresses on the outside that make the tower look oval. This is found in just one other church in Suffolk.
In the first half of the 19th century All Saints was a derelict ruin. The original thatched roof had rotted away and the nave was open to the elements. Restoration began in the 1950's with the additions of a new tiled roof and porch.
Inside it is light and airy with rows of wooden box pews and a brick floor leading to the altar. There is a two tier altar and a lovely stone medieval font. The Norman door leading to the tower is all that remains of the original building.
Outside in the churchyard it is a delightful haven of peace and tranquillity and adorned with wild flowers. There are some interesting grave stones dating back to the 18th century. Some of the most notable belong to the Waller family and are adorned with skull and crossed bones. The view from the churchyard extend to the banks of the River Deben and beyond. There is no better place to sit, contemplate and watch the sun set over the water (but not tonight unfortunately).
