Khon Dancer
Khon dance is a traditional Thai dance based on the legacy of the Hindu Ramayana epic. It involves rich costumes and painted masks. There are four sets of characters in this drama dance: males, females, monkeys & demons.
This show is part of the festivities that are being played to celebrate the Queen's birthday (on August 12th). It is under the Royal patronage of Queen Sirikit.
Khon dances used to be played at royal courts only. No females could be involved in the dance drama. So, traditionally the role of females is always played by men. It is the same in Japan with the Nô or Kabuki theaters.
This young Khon performer was resting after a dance and this is when i took this blip to show the mask he is wearing and part of his costume.
Nowadays, this is a very rare scene to see. Expect more in the next few days!
