Munich - day 2
Today was hot and sunny so after breakfast we hired bicycles and decided to explore the city by bike. There are so many cyclists here, and there are great cycle lanes that are on the pavement next to the pedestrian lane so you feel safe as you are not cycling on the roads with the cars. Luke showed us his student accommodation which was in a lovely quiet area of Munich, leafy and very neat with new buildings. We then headed off to see the Nymphenburg Castle, which was very pretty with beautiful gardens. On the way there Adam got a puncture so that wasted a bit of time getting that fixed. It was so hot when we got there, about 29C today, that we did not have the energy to go through the castle but after exploring the gardens we headed off to the Hirschgarten beer garden, which is the largest in Munich (seating for 8000!). Gavin, Luke and Adam enjoyed a maß of beer each - this is one litre of beer! You can see how large the maßkrug is here as Adam enjoys his beer. Actually the boys are not really beer drinkers but you cannot come to Munich and not drink beer.
We then cycled back to the Englisher Garten where they have the Eisbach, a canal of freezing cold water in which people swim (despite signs saying that swimming there is forbidden as it is life threatening!) and people also surf in the waves. Although the water was really cold it was refreshing after such a hot day.
I am now really tired after all that cycling and my morning run, my legs feel like lead and I am ready to collapse into bed.
