Sugar cane anyone?

Sugar cane being sold after church. It is a common sight here. The guy selling cuts off the hard outer 'bark' (for lack of a better term) and then chops the tender-inner 'bit' -into small pieces. These pieces are the ones which are chewed and sucked to get the sugar cane juice. And once drained of all goodness, the fibers are ejected from the mouth! Posh guys spit into the plastic bags ... others simple let 'em fly "any howly" leaving quite a mess on the street. I'm not a big fan of the pieces but don't mind the juice when ginger and ice are added,
