This is my moment of rejection. Too short-sighted and too tall, said nurse. I could have added too cowardly.

We were at an event called The Day Our World Changed, remembering the outbreak of the Great War 100 years ago. Dozens of actors mingled with the crowds on Mevagissey Harbour to evoke the atmosphere of the 1914 recruitment drive.

It was brilliantly done.
