Folkestone

Much of the local news was given over to Prince Harry's visit to Folkestone to declare open the arch commemorating WWI and to recounting Folkestone's part in the Great War generally. The arch stands at the head of the Road of Remembrance, steep and formerly cobbled, where the men marching onto ships to France would be ordered to step short to avoid slipping. Millions of men passed through and one million didn't return. Before the war the town was one of the smartest resorts in Europe. During it the once grand houses became soldiers' billets and given over to military purposes. The town never reclaimed it's former status.
