Little worlds

This is Bird Rock. Any guesses into how it achieved such a glamorous name?

Other than the smell, this is a really cool little off-shore island. The birds live on the little green patch, they fish in the sea, they poop on the rock, it fertilizes the little green patch. The cycle is complete, but there is more...

When it rains, which is only in spring in Southern California, all of the guano washes in to the surrounding kelp forest and produces a huge influx of rich nutrients. This is also the time of year when the local algae starts to bloom.

It is very cool to witness harmony.
