Closed to Visitors

You may stand and stare
but I will watch you
from my box.

You may point your lens
but I am watching
from another angle
on the CCTV screen.

You may feign a gaze
across the lawn
as you mock my faux-exotic hat
but I am watching
where you pause and how you turn.

You may seem to look through me
as I move the sign
two degrees this way or that
but I am watching
- sun or rain, night or day -
how you react

and I bet you never dream
you are the subject
of my semiotics PhD.
