Sri Lanka - Day 3 - Sigiriya

Sigiriya, a Royal Citadel for 20 years in the 5th Century AD, considered as the 8th Wonder of the modern world - stark and forbidding, haunted by an epic story of murder and betrayal is attributed to King Kasyapa who was found hiding here after killing his father. This unique Rock Fortress or "castle in the sky" - a massive monolith of red stone that rises 600ft above ground , derived the name "Lion Rock" as the entrance to the climb to the summit is reached between the paws of a lion.

The old boy had a couple of things right, once inside the base of the fortress surrounded by a moat quicksand then one of man eating crocodiles, he use to watch his 500 concubines bathe in the pools, then get his guards to carry him the 1200 odd steps to the top of the fortress.

In the afternoon we went on a Jeep Safari of the Minneriya National Park famous for its many large herds of wild elephants, one of the blighters decided to chase us which was 'exciting'.

As I write this a monkey has come into the room and pinched all the sugar.

The Internet connection is dire, this is the 8th upload attempt (at a small resolution)
