A Glaswegian Gem

Standing in St. Enoch Square, Glasgow, this attractive wee building used to be the headquarters and ticket of the Glasgow District Subway Railway Company. The subway opened 14th December 1896 making it the third oldest underground railway in the world. Designed by architect James Miller in 1896, the former HQ is made of red sandstone and is of the Jacobean style. It was carefully preserved when the subway was renovated during 1977-1980. After then, it lost the ticket office and became a travel information centre. When this was relocated underground into the St. Enoch Subway station ticket hall in 2008 the building fell into disuse. Not for long though because in 2009, my favourite coffee shop chain Caffe Nero opened it as an outlet. Unsurprisingly the building is Category A listed. To the left of picture stands the St. Enoch Shopping Centre which stands on the site of the former mainline St. Enoch Station and hotel that closed to services in 1966 then criminally demolished during 1977.
