Living in Brabant

By AilsaR

The local library has a small, but informative photographic exhibition about WWI.
Although the Netherlands wasn't occupied during WW1, it's neighbouring country, Belgium, was.
At that time, around 15,000-20,000 soldiers were billeted to Tilburg to guard the border posts, help with refugees, etc.

What I didn't know was that around 15,000 Belgian refugees came to Tilburg (and the surrounding areas).

Some old photographs exist of those refugees, travelling with only the clothes on their backs, and a suitcase full of their possessions.

Poignant photos, and 100 years later, sadly familiar.

I took a photo of an old railway line at the edge of the city. Closed down long ago, part of it is now a cycle route which leads to and from Belgium.
