Swimming in the rain
A bit of a contrast to last week's epic swim...
Mr G had set himself one more big challenge this summer - the 14.1km swim down the Thames from Henley to Marlow. This is an event he has been training hard for, and I have been dreading, for months. My apprehensions about the event were not helped by the weather forecasts - surely a day on which there are extreme weather warnings in force concerning the tail end of hurricane Bertha is not a sensible day to be heading off at 4.30am to the scene of last year's floods to go swimming in a river, attempting a distance more than double your previous best? Suffice to say, I didn't sleep much last night. And I was possibly not at my most supportive when woken just after 4 to get into the car.
As it was, the rain didn't really kick in until the swimmers got going, so didn't interfere with them much. We had packed sufficient wet weather gear to keep me and the children at least vaguely dry for the duration. And Mr G managed to complete the race, accident and incident free, in a highly impressive 3hrs 53mins. And we all made it home intact, just as the wind *really* started blowing.
One day I'll learn not to worry so much in advance... Maybe.
