Lowreyesque building

When I first moved to York some 45 years ago, this was our local primary school but it sat in the midst of a rather rough and needy neighbourhood. The building is typcally victorian and was built in 1896 and was a Board School originally, that is a school for elementary education free from the Anglican religion.

Things have changed a lot since I came to York and Scarcroft and it's neighbouring Clementhorpe are now among the most sought after areas to live and the school has flourished.

The green in the foreground used to be an empty and overgrown area where undesirables would hang out and party at night. Now trees have been planted and play equipment installed and the locals are very proud of their green area.
