At Buckie Loch

Buckie Loch (in the Culbin Forest) is not a loch, in the normal sense of the term. Actually, a century ago, it was a small fresh water loch, occasionally inundated by exceptional winter storms. Over the years it has almost dried out, only small clearings remaining damp enough to support yellow flag iris and bulrushes. The willows round the clearing are all dead and leafless, and festooned with lichen, perhaps because the ground has become too dry or salty for them.

This tree stump on the dunes at the edge of the loch caught my eye.
