History uncovered
When we went to Bristol last week we stayed with my Niece. She had a builder in the house converting the cupboard under the stairs into a downstairs toilet.
Prior to replastering the wall some drawings were revealed on the old plaster. Sadly not a 'Banksy' but very interesting nonetheless.
They appear to date back to the Second World War when Bristol was heavily bombed and the family who lived in this house used the under-stairs cupboard as an air-raid shelter. We were horrified that this bit of history was to be plastered over without recording it so I offered to photograph it for the record. This is a photo of the photo that we are going to frame and send to them so they can hang it in the new toilet.
The drawings were quite faint but a bit of processing has brought out all the detail. It's worth viewing LARGE to see the detail.
They call the shelter their 'Siren Hole'. There is a drawing of Hitler as well as someone called Angela aged 16. There's also a drawing that looks like a child in nappies with the rhyme '1357 all good piggies go to Heaven'.
We don't know who these people are. Angela would now be in her late 80s.
