Brigham Scows - shades of yesteryear
Brigham scows are still sailed on the River Hull, although not in such large numbers as in the 50's 60's and 70's. During this period regattas were held regularly and provided a popular day out for families in the area.
The boats do not conform to strict class specifications but are generally flat bottomed 16 feet long 4ft 6ins wide. They carry a lug sail of around 225 sq ft.
Steering these boats within the confined of the River Hull must be quite an art, but they raced every weekend and in their heyday some 15 boats took part!
