Mother Shipton...

...still going strong.

Otherwise known as Ursula Soothtell (or Sonthell) and supposedly born in a cave at Knaresborough and known as a soothsayer and prophetess who died late 1500/early 1600s. She married a carpenter called Shipton.

The Petrifying Well and Mother Shipton's Cave is operated as a visitor attraction in parkland by the river which goes through the town.

The pub which is called after her dates back to the 1600s.
